Public Transport & Transfer from Beijing (Peking) Airport (PEK), China
Check in desks at Beijing airport terminal 3
Beijing Capital International Airport is the busiest airport in Asia, located in the Chaoyang District about 19 miles northeast of the capital metropolis of the People's Republic of China. Terminals 1 and 2 are linked together by a walkway, a free shuttle bus travels between Terminals 1 & 2 and the new large (2008 Olympics) Terminal 3.
A common alternative to travelling around by public transport is cycling, there is plenty of bicycle hire available around hotels and tourist areas and main roads have cycle lanes. Foreign visitors are not allowed to drive their own car in China, unless complicated and expensive official arrangements are made far in advance.
Taxi Only use official airport taxis and insist that the meter is used, fare rates per km. are listed on the side of each cab and an identity card should be displayed on the dashboard. The journey time to downtown can take an hour depending on traffic. Show your destination on a map or have it written down in Chinese characters.
Bus The Airport-City shuttle bus runs various routes to the city, Beijing train station and major hotels; details from Beijing airport website. Xidan is in central Beijing and a short walk from the Forbidden City. Large hotels provide courtesy buses. A shuttle bus also runs to Tianjin from the airport.
For cheaper travel to the Bejing university district from the airport, save money by taking shuttle bus line 5 to Zhongguancun Bridge, cheap taxis run from there to most of the major universities.
Train The Airport Express is the best option for quick transfers to the city centre. For about £2.50 the high speed service takes less than 30 minutes into the stations of Sanyuanqiao and Dongzhimen, for quick access to the underground system. The Dragon underground network is very easy to use for travelling around the city, stops are conveniently announced in English and Chinese.
The city has two main train stations: The grand old Beijing Zhan Station (for Shanghai and international trains to Moscow, Pyongyang and Ulaan Baatar) is close to Tiananmen Square; the huge modern Beijing-West Xi Zhan Station has long-distance train services to Hong Kong and Vietnam.
