Guide to Belgium Christmas Markets

Antwerp Christmas Market

2nd week December to 1st week January

Saturday / Sunday 12.00 - 22.00
The annual Christmas market in Antwerp is centered around the pictoresque cathedral square Grote Markt, where the traditional ice rink will be present from the second week of December until a few days after New Year. There is also a separate ice rink and an activity tent for children. The square is packed with the usual festively decorated stalls laden with all kinds of Christmas goodies, all accompanied by live music.
Huge Christmas trees are placed at Koningin Astridplein, Handschoenmarkt and Grote Markt. A winter fun fair with vintage rides is held at at Winterfoor, try the Belgian smoutebollen here (deep-fried dough balls covered with icing sugar).
On December 31st the New Year's fireworks grand finale takes off from a boat in the Schelde river. Best views are from the riverbank's terraces, but get there early to secure a place amongst the crowds.
