Every year before Christmas, Aachen's historic city centre is
transformed into a festival of light and colour. The famous
Aachen Christmas City Market now attracts an estimated 1.5 million
visitors every year. Amongst them are shoppers from Holland, Belgium,
France and the UK. Numerous stalls in the Market Place, Katschhof
and in the adjoining pictoresque small streets offer a variety of
traditional crafts and freshly baked specialities such as cakes,
gingerbreads, marzipan bread and the delicious Aachen Printen cookies.
Children can enjoy a turn on the carousel, potato frites are eaten all day
by everyone and the mulled wine flows freely.

Berlin offers a choice of Christmas markets with a city atmosphere and
is host to more than 50 individual Christmas markets. Those who
like to combine the festivities with some serious shopping and
nightlife will particularly like the Christmas market at the
Gedächtniskirche. This market is located at the beginning of the
Kurfurstendamm, the famous West Berlin thoroughfare lined with shops,
restaurants and nightclubs. Young children will love the Fairy Forest
and the large skating rink at the Alexanderplatz market. Lovers of nostalgia will like the
many traditional crafts and antique toys
on offer at the Unter den Linden Christmas market. There is a great programme of
cultural events laid on in town as well.

Cologne offers 7 Christmas markets in total to the visitor. Each of
the 4 main Christmas markets are unique in their different ways and
they are located at Alter Markt, Cologne Cathedral, Neumarkt and
Rudolfplatz. There is also a medieval Christmas market held at the
Chocolate Museum. The market at Cologne Cathedral has the most impressive
backdrop, whilst the Christmas market on Neumarkt is the city's oldest. The
market on Rudolfplatz is set in front of the Hahnentorburg, and the
market on the Alter Markt has particularly pretty timbered stalls.

Düsseldorf has twice the fun in two main market areas: The Christmas
market at Schadowplatz and the Nikolaus market in the Altstadt. The
latter extends from Marktplatz at the town hall across the
Stadtbrückchen to Heinrich-Heine-Platz. Wooden stalls laden with an
array of craft items, ornaments and gifts line the narrow winding
streets. Delicious cinnamon cakes and mulled red wine are part of the
season too, not to forget the festively decorated shop windows and the
various special Christmas events.
Lübeck Christmas Market

The traditional Christmas market in Lübeck's old quarter hosts the annual Lübeck Christmas fair,
which takes place on the Rathausmarkt near the Town Hall. Stalls sell an array of Christmas decorations, toys, gingerbread and spiced wine. Also worth visiting is the Christmas Fairy Tale Forest at St. Mary's
Church, showing beautiful scenes from the magical Brothers Grimm stories. An excellent craft fair is held at the medieval Heiligen Geist Hospital, with exhibits from all over Germany and Northern Europe. There is a skating rink at Ice World Lübeck, located at the Media Docks. Don't miss Lübeck's famous local speciality: - marzipan!
Ludwigsburg Christmas Market

Ludwigsburg, just north of Stuttgart, has a beautiful Christmas
market set in the picturesque marketplace of the town. The stunning Baroque
architecture and decorations make this market unique. Daily live
entertainment and music make this a lively town to visit, and the three
castles which surround the town add an impressive backdrop.
Munich Christmas Market

Munich's traditional Christmas market on Marienplatz in the heart of
the city centre goes back as far as the 14th century. Around 100
merchants set up their stalls on Munich's largest urban square,
offering all kinds of hand-crafted items and delicious goodies like
roast apples and gingerbreads. The popular Kripperlmarkt, a
short walk away on nearby Rindermarkt, specialises in cribs and other
Nativity articles. Live Christmas music is played live from the
town hall balcony every day. For children there are free creative activities.
Münster Christmas Market

Münster has no less than 6 Christmas markets with a total of 280 stalls. The markets are all situated close together around the old town centre, the Altstadt. Kerstmarkt Kiepenkerl is the most traditional, and is grouped around a sky high Christmas tree in front of lovely medieval gabled houses. Here you'll find things like small painted angels, coloured candles, hot chocolate, and a very popular stall with all kinds of kaleidoscopes. Other Münster Christmas markets include Kerstmarkt Hauptbahnhof (near the station), Kerstmarkt Pferdegasse, Aegidiimarkt, Lichtermarkt St.Lamberti (closes 22 December), Kerstmarkt Rathaus-Innenhof (historic location of the famous Münster Peace Treaty). Sample a glass of 'Feuerzangenbowle', a heady mix of Spanish wine, rum and roasted sugar, and fill up with tasty German Currywurst and potato cake. Close to the Christmas markets you'll also discover cosy cafes, speciality bakeries and fantastic shopping.

Nuremberg hosts one of Germany's oldest and most famous Christmas
markets which is visited by over 2 million people each year. This market is
known as the Christ Child market, or Nürnberg Christkindlesmarkt, and
a chosen 'Christ Child' opens the market each year with an
impressive ceremony. Browse the stalls for wonderful crafts and
Christmas fare, gingerbread, glühwein and German bratwurst.
Seek out the beautiful nativity cribs on display in various locations
around the town. Gabled townhouses add a picturesque
backdrop to this market, and the procession of children walking with
lanterns through the town up to Nuremberg Castle is a sight not to be
missed.

Stuttgart has much to offer the Christmas market shopper. The market
dates back to 1692, making it one of Germany's oldest. It is also one
of the most beautiful and largest Christmas markets in Europe, with
over 200 beautifully decorated stalls lining the Marktplatz and
Schillerplatz. The Stuttgart Christmas Market traditionally opens on
the last Thursday in November with a ceremonial concert in the inner
courtyard of the Altes Schloss. Local wooden houses here are
lovingly decorated with angels and fir twigs. The range of goods on
offer vary from Christmas decorations, toys and woodcarvings to mulled
wine, waffles and sausages. The magical 'Fairy-tale Land' for
children at Schlossplatz has merry-go-rounds and live stage performances.
There is an open-air ice rink in front of the New Castle.
