Kitzbühel is a beautiful medieval walled town with pastel painted houses and cobbled streets, situated amongst the forested Alpine scenery of the Austrian Tyrol. The skiing here is centred around 2 main areas, the famous Hahnenkamm World Cup ski downhill course and the Kitzbüheler Horn and includes the resorts of Kirchberg, Aurach, Jochberg and Pass Thurn. All these resorts are interconnected by lifts or bus and train service. Most runs at Kitzbuhel are for beginners and intermediate skiers and it is an excellent place for building up confidence for the nervous. The long fast Hahnenkamm is a tougher ride. The Kitzbüheler Alpen Ski Pass allows access to more than 30 resorts and an impressive 680km of runs.
Public transport: there are train connections to Kitzbuhel from Salzburg, with changes in Wörgl or Bischofshofen. From Salzburg Airport, take a shuttle to the train station, from where trains take approximately 2¾ hrs. to reach the resort. Buses from Salzburg take approximately 1¾ hrs, first stopping at Kitzbuhel. From Innsbruck train station there is a direct train to Kitzbuhel. Another common route is to take a train from the main train station in Munich to Kitzbühel or to Wörgl, from where there is a train to Kitzbuhel every hour, total journey time can take from 2.5-3.5 hours. Accommodation in KitzbuhelThe ski season runs from mid December to the start of April, optimum conditions are from February to mid March and cheapest rates are found usually in January or March. Finding accommodation in Kitzbuhel is no problem, there is a large choice of beds at modest prices in pensions, apartments and guesthouses. Room availability can be a problem at busy weekends and during the January Mens Downhill Race week, so book ahead at these times. Nearby Kirchberg has many reasonably priced Bed & Breakfasts, tends to be less expensive and is good for families. A list of apartments is available from the Kitzbühel and the Kirchberg tourist offices. A few recommended hotels are Sonnenhof, Schweizerhof, Kaiser Hotel, Weisses Rossl, Karlburger.Bars, restaurants and après skiKitzbuhel has plenty of cheap eating places and take aways, including a McDonalds, as well as quieter bars and nice cafés serving delicious hot chocolate and Austrian pastries. The mountain restaurants get a lot of praise. The vibrant nightlife is a great selling point here and goes on till late with lots of venues for the young and active. Popular disco's and hangouts are Take 5, Olympia, the Londoner, Stamperl. The Casino is sophisticated, Seppi's has TV sport.Non-Skiing ActivitiesKitzbuhel is a good resort for non-skiers. The excellent Aquarena is an indoor sports centre with a swimming pool, sauna, steamroom and solarium. The pictoresque town has plenty of nice boutiques and shops. Sightseers can visit the castles and palaces of Innsbruck and Salzburg. Kitzbühel's position on the main rail line also makes for easy day trips to Vienna or Linz. The nearby Aurach nature reserve has lots of wildlife in a lovely Alpine setting. Other activities are winter hiking, ice skating, balloon trips, paragliding, snowshoeing, sleigh rides and some good snowboarding on the varied terrain and half pipes at the Horn. |
