Guide to Obertauern, Austrian Alps

Obertauern is a more upmarket, purpose-built ski resort, noted for its reliable snow, doorstep skiing and long skiing season. You'll find a wide variety of ski runs above the tree line, the nursery slopes and ski schools are conveniently located close to the village. For expert skiers there is lots of of powdery off-piste and a few black runs with moguls. The resort is also part of the Top Tauern Ski Check pass scheme which includes more than 30 ski resort areas.

Getting to Obertauern

The quickest and cheapest way to travel to Obertauern ski resort is to first one of the many cheap flights to Salzburg or Munich airports.
Obertauern ski resort lies only 55 miles from Salzburg, the nearest international airport. Munich airport (140 miles) is also a possibility. Flying to Salzburg and taking a shuttle or hire car to the resort is the best way of getting to Obertauern when not on a package holiday.
Public transport: Trains go from Salzburg station to Radstadt station, 13 miles from Obertauern ski resort. From Radstadt a local bus runs to the resort, or take a taxi. Regular Eurocity trains run to from Munich to Salzburg, change here for the train connection to Radstadt and then take the local bus or taxi.

Accommodation in Obertauern

Accommodation is in mainly in high-rise hotels and guesthouses. Many of Obertauern's modern chalet-style hotels are open only in the ski-season (Nov-early May), making the accommodation here more expensive. About 6500 beds are on offer in various self-catering apartments, guesthouses, homely Bed & Breakfasts, or 2 to 4 star hotels. The cheapest rates tend to be found during the 2 weeks before Christmas, the last 3 weeks of January and the end of the season.

Bars, restaurants and après ski

Obertauern adds to its appeal by being a lot quieter, although the resort offers plenty of cafés, bars and discos, as well as a huge choice of mountain restaurants and eateries on the slopes. Austrian apres ski nightlife is very lively and accompanied by lots of beer. The Edelweiss Hut offers crazy entertainment and local music from late afternoon, the Lurzer Alm is a popular apres ski spot for all ages. Other venues are the Gasthof Taverne, Havana Bar, People Bar, Monkey circus, and many more to keep even the most hardened party animal amused.

Activities

Obertauern now boasts 6 ski schools and a great new sports centre with indoor tennis, bowling, sauna. Children's facilities are good. Other activities include sleigh rides, sledging, winter walks, night skiing. The village has many shops with a good choice of outdoor gear and hire equipment. Sightseers can take excursions to Salzburg, or go skiing in the villages of Radstadt, Mauterndorf, Tweng and Untertauern. Mautendorf is a lovely hamlet with a magnificent castle, the Pöllatal Nature Park is also nearby. For snowboarders there is a dedicated snowboard school, lots of freeriding and a freestyle fun park at the Kehrkopfbahn lift.
